20080510 UT County Nominating Convention

This was held at UVSC/UVU McKay Events Center. Excellent turnout of delegates who were credentialed. Over 95% showed up. I was a bit late due to other scheduled events BUT I was credentialed!

There was a good amount of business that was completed considering the size of the group. I did not note any of the busy work for getting the convention going including credentials, rules, agenda.
5/10/2008 11:12:12 AM Call To Order James Evans I am from CD1 and since there was nothing happening there, I am chairing here. Speaking in random order: Stone, Ferguson, Leavitt, Chafetz, Cannon. Each candidate has seven minutes. Timekeeper has 1 min green, 30 second yellow, 0 red and please applaud.
5/10/2008 11:12:12 AM Introductions Stone “Republican party cheer. Hip, hip, hooray. 3rd district is going to be the best. My name is Stone Fanua. I have been here for 40 years. I wasn’t able to find a place here.
I wrote a peacemaker bill 2 years ago. I want us to black out emotion. When Cain killed Abel he hid in the blackout emotion. We need to stay out of the dark and be in the light.
We must learn peace here first before we can spread it. That is the first part of the bill.
When you get a phone call from teen about committing suicide, then you can turn to the peacemaker bill. How about when your son comes to you and says they are gay. You must look to the bill.
The first teaching was stay away from the fire. Now we are taking them away from fire.
We need to deliver peace to the world. Social security is helping a lot of people we need to extend it.
The second part of the bill is a money part of the bill. It works like a pre-pay credit card. This is like a trust fund and you put your trust fund together with your term life insurance as an estate. This is what you use for leverage.
I have more tshirts like this. 30 of them for 1000.00 each. I know that the bill makes the rich richer but that Is how the world goes. It is built like a footprint in the sand. It goes wherever you go.
This trust fund will pay off your debt when your dead. I am a little nervous but I have a son watching me and so I am working for peace. This bill won’t cost any money because you will govern your selves.
The Liahona is the sign of the V hand down as a V and the second sign is the thumb pointing up where it came from. These are the signs.
The Stone, the Rock, rolling to Washington.”
5/10/2008 11:19:27 AM Nomination Michael Demahan I am a retired general from the Army. I am proud of all the work that is done in this country. I took an oath to defend this country against enemies foreign and domestic. I nominate Joe MPC Ferguson.
5/10/2008 11:20:38 AM Second The Congress is building insolvency. They have incurred more debt than we can meet. Please give a chance or us to get our country back and keep us away from the NAU. I second the nomination for Joe Ferguson.
5/10/2008 11:21:36 AM Introductions Joe Ferguson “The wealth and power of the federal government is not being used well. Billions of dollars in DOE and we are in a deficit of energy. Please raise your hands those who have served in the Armed Services. We each took an oath to defend the constitution against enemies foreign and domestic. We have a tremendous problem in the NAU. The merger with Mexico and Canada. We may cease to be America. This will be an insult to all those who have worn the uniform. Those who wore it in revelution and the creators of the constitution.
This is a slide of the NAU and there are new super highways across our borders. Any country in the world could ship containers to the US without inspection. Anything could be in those containers. The illegal problem would create 30, 40, 50 million. It will hurt our country.
Do you not believe me about this NAU. Some of you have studied this issue and understand it. This is a critical time. Our congressman should be aware of and be a watchman on the tower to let us know about this. You have a decision to make.
If you want to see us stay our. The other 2 do not have the fire in the belly to avoid the pressure.
Next slide this is my flag.”
5/10/2008 11:27:46 AM Introductions “Video with David Leavitt with fireman. We all need to work together. “”I’m Proud to be American”” with slide montage. It’s our can do spirit that helps us do things better. That’s why there is hope. The decisions we make now are critical.”
5/10/2008 11:30:57 AM Introductions David Leavitt “The vision of what needs to be. The courage to stand alone. The courage to inspire the people who need to follow. That is the leadership that will change this nation.
The problems are not too complex, we have strayed from what will make us great.
We can restore America’s promise of hope. We must be willing to sacrifice what it takes to save the country. Ronald Reagan told us that there are simple answers. We must have te courage to do what is morally right.
Tough yet kind. Principled yet practical. Honest, God fearing and willing to do what is right. We don’t’ need a politician we need a statesman. Our hope of stirring us to the right is God. President Reagan said that we embrace faith by design and fail if we forget it. We must care for freedom enough to do what must be done and stand alone if necessary. We must love freedom enough to sacrifice today for our children tomorrow. We must not assume that the toll paid before was enough. We must preserve and perpetuate our freedoms.
Send me to Washington and I will be your statesman. WE will be free. Thank you very much. Balloons (blue and orange).”
5/10/2008 11:36:01 AM Information James Evans Please don’t pop the balloons.
5/10/2008 11:36:18 AM Introductions Jason Chaffetz “I am proud to stand here as a candidate who will go to Washington and get things done. If we want different results we are going to have to elect different people. We have abandoned the principles and need to return to them.
We had the House and Senate. I am not going back to be a friend or statesman. I am going back to get things done. We can not sustain our debt.
Last year we paid 420 million in debt. We don’t need another attorney. I will nost ask for earmarks until we have reform.
We need to tackle entitlement reform. I worry about our attitude. I want to follow Romney’s guidance to cape spending. I want to repeal NCLB there shouldn’t be federal mandates.
National security we need to secure our best people who are doing 90% of the heavy lifting.
Energy is a national security issue. We need to use resources in our backyard. We have to change the way we do business in Washington DC. I am pro nuclear. We need to take off the stops.
Governor Huntsman, global warming is a farce.
Our illegal immigration where we have enforcement not match policy is wrong. We need to have the will to make this work. I reject amnesty. We need to lock down the border. Birthright citizenship needs to go. We need to have the will to enforce what we have. We need more retention facilities. Finally English should be the official language of America.
I don’t offer you free popcorn, videos and pizzas. I spent 100,000.00 and outspent by 6:1 and 9:1. You have mail and a speech that was focused on issue. What you see is what you get.
Mr. Cannon has operated his campaign in debt and so has Mr. Leavitt. I am debt free and proud of it and we need that attitude in Washington DC. These are good men but we have a different attitude and passion. I owe much to this community
I am a convert to Church and this party. I will do everything I can to fight for what is right.
God Bless you and God bless the United States of America.”
5/10/2008 11:43:55 AM Introductions Video. John Harmer nominating. He went door to door early. His seniority and influence has paid dividends. He has worked to enforce borders. He has opposed gambling and other issues that are Utah’s concern. You have to earn influence in Washington. Bennett: You know he does a really good job and that is his reputation here. Why would we let him go? He has a solid base that we can build on. Ellertson: I have seen him get things done that need to happen. He knows DC. People listen to him there. Why would we want to start over with someone else. Bush: Dear friends I want you to know that I support Chris Cannon. He has spent countless hours working against global terrorism. We need experience here in Congress and the House.
5/10/2008 11:47:27 AM Introductions Chris Cannon “When we talked about what to say we decided to talk about myself. I grew up in CA and then struggled BYU doing my bachelors. I then went to work for Reagan in his departments.
I then scraped together money to run a steel mill. I have been the only one in this race who has had people’s pay checks on the line based on my work. Congress is not my only work and I have lots of other things I want to do.
I ran for congress and defeated the Democrat. When I accepted this job I took a strong principle with me. The Internet was about to be taxed. The trial lawyers I stopped. My work is far from finished. I am working on the Oil Shale issue to move it from 7 years to seven weeks.
I am working on a bill to solve the eVerify problem. We need a Congressman who already knows how to get it done in Clinton and Obama’s machine. I will not have what they want.
We need to develop our shale.
I will keep fighting for Utah.”
