20110430 Utah County Organizing Convention

This Utah County Republican Party Organizing Convention was held at Timpview High School. It was well attended and the HB116 issue was debated.

4/30/2011 10:13:50 AM Information Taylor Oldroyd “Ballots for early votes
4/30/2011 10:14:19 AM Rules Mark Cluff “I have enjoyed these last four years and I am not running for anything at this time. The rules are in your packet. These were set by executive and are here for ratification.
Passes unanimous”
4/30/2011 10:15:16 AM Business Taylor Oldroyd “Without objection our agenda is approved.
We will now hear from our State Central Committee candidates.”
4/30/2011 10:17:07 AM Candidate Kirby Glad “I am for a change in the direction. We live in a time when our party is in peril. I want us to have a voice. I am not hearing our voice clearly.
Here is a postcard of the Democrats. This postcard has a list of why it is okay to be a Democrat. We got this for my daughter who is 20 years old.
We are instead arguing on what our agenda is. That is the very definition of bickering. I want us to do the right things. I want us to help Philpot get elected or to get our platform in to place.
I hope that you received our 9for5 priorities. Debating bylaws is not our number one prioirty. We have a specific plan for how to do our 5 things. You cannot bring about change with just one person. You want to have a group to move forward because you don’t want conflicting prioirties. You need to vote for four candidateas that agree to the same priorities. We have come together to give you the choice. We are united in one thing.
We need a new direction and these five priorities are that direction. We have taken people with different approaches but we need to unite, not divide.
Many want to know what kind of chair I would be. I have included information for more delegates. We have sent out proposals and made changes based on your comments. We started putting forward For and Against. We have handled more issues quickly. You should not have to study a manual to participate in our meetings. We will protect your rights.
9 steering committee members for 5 priorities. I want us to be the 1,456 for 5 team.”
4/30/2011 10:33:43 AM Nomination Marian M David Acheson for the party chair. I do not lend my nomination lightly. David picks up the phone rather than sending endless emails. He considers all of us as a team and not just a few. He will turn our dreams into a reality. David is what the party needs now.
4/30/2011 10:34:39 AM Candidate David Acheson “Our meetings are ineffective and we are weak. Many important issues languish. We need a solid example and practical solutions.
Bad news I am an attorney. Good news, I don’t’ practice. I value a good debate when I see one. We have to listen better. The reason is that we improve our own positions and tighten our own arguments. I am not saying that we will all sing kumbaya.
But we will tighten our debates and arguments and our differences will become sharper and not fuzzier. That is when membership in this party becomes exhilerating. You will be able to lead out more.
You had better bring your best game. You have to be succinct with fair and reasonable time limits to get your message out. You need to duke it out. You need to select legislators who follow your views. I will hold our time precious and I will control our meetings as needed to set and finalize all agendas.
Robust, articulate debate should not be feared. I will hold Utah County conferences with keynots and multiple discussions.
Parliamentary procedure can feel like a weapon not a tool. I will have people around to coach. Just two of the many ideas I have. Come join me.
Game on.”
4/30/2011 10:39:07 AM Business Richard Jaussi “Another ballot requested.
4/30/2011 10:39:21 AM Candidate Dave Duncan “I believe we need to empower the delgates of this party. Email is fine but we need to expand our communication process. We need to use social media.
We also need a way for you to communicate like an official party forum would be great. We need to allow you to particpate. We are in a crisis because we are not following the principles. I re-read the county and state GOP platforms.
I believe in our platform and it is what binds us together. We would not be in the crisis we are in if we followed it.
Your neighbors have given you power. The leaders of our party need to know that the party is not theirs. You are the policitcal voice of Utah County. We know that it is not common for you to choose the wrong voice. We need to give you the information you need and the majority of you need to get the information.
As your agent I will act based on your voice even though I might not agree. We can hold more open meetings for reports and getting information out. Those who only want to do the business can come at the right times.
I have shared all of the concerns that I have with the issues. It is important for you to know what my opinions are.
I do not have hidden agendas. I offer you a chair that is free from obligations. I oppose the Veto Power grab. The reality is that we can’t modify the Constitution without approval. At the last SCC meeting I tried to overturn. I hope to overcome this at the State Convention.
I will respect the rules. My name is Dave Duncan I ask for your support.”
4/30/2011 10:44:50 AM Nomination Lisa Shepherd as Utah Country Vice Chair. She knows where all of you are and where you live. I nominate her and ask you to join me in voting for Lisa Shepherd.
4/30/2011 10:45:27 AM Nomination Morgan Philpot I am proud to stand and endorse Lisa Shepeherd. I was talking about her how she would be up at 2 am to deliver signs for a campaign. Please giver her your vote today.
4/30/2011 10:46:07 AM Candidate Lisa Shepherd “I want to say thanks to Brian, my son, for coming. I am not going to talk about the materials you have to read.
I am going to talk about our vision. I wish all of you can see what I can see from up here. This is an inspiring Sight. I can’t think of a better place. Let me share my vision.
I see 100s of energized Republicans. People who have the courage to act and work for our future. I see some people sitting together but standing apart.
I see sources of wounds. I see a desire for leadership to move beyond a troubled moment. I see a desire for leadership that inspires kindness and civility.
That inspires us to treat each other with respect and dignity. I see people proud of our platforms and discussions and debates. I see people who want to fight side by side against the real enemy. Those who want to destroy liberty.
I see our grand ole party bringing our party to the power of our latent vote. My role as Vice Chair is to bring renewed focus to fund raising. I can work behind the scenes to rally and support which ever of the men you choose today. I see to our very core that we believe what President Reagan said to always be free.
I hope you can see my vision as our party’s Vice Chair.”
4/30/2011 10:49:57 AM Nomination Becky Pirente “The lists were what I came to expect from Adrielle.”
4/30/2011 10:49:57 AM Candidate Adrielle Herring “In my thirties I stood with my husband. I ran for chair and have wanted to empower ordinary people to do extraordinary things. I have directed projects from design to delivery.
At the end of this term I invited the education officers to come together to form a team. We have served you together with a remarkable degree of unity. We have provided education training and so many things. This was accomplished by leadership, hard work and civility.
This is how I work and operate. I hope that you have received and benefitted from the things that we have worked so hard to create.
Everything we have done has been for you. I appreciate so much the support of those leg district officers who made this a great year for UCRP education. I believe that this has been a very good time for education. Last year when you worked so hard to create education materials.
I trained small groups and large groups. I was working to empower hundreds of people to help all of our candidates. I will work with the same energy to fundraise and provide information and prepare our young people to defend their own freedoms.
The more people that are involved the better the system is. My vision is to keep the party strong and improve the representation in this party demographics.
We need to practice for what is coming. We need to change our culture of complacency now before we lose seats. There were so many new people that came to our party.
2012 will set the tone for the next years.
Life is precious we have no time to lose.”
4/30/2011 10:55:34 AM Nomination Amy Roberts I am here to nominate my husband for County Party Secretary. He is great at fund raising. He can work on campaigns to get Republicans elected. Make him your new Secretary he is a lot of fund and it wont’ be boring and we will be proud to be Republican again.
4/30/2011 10:56:35 AM Nomination Daniel Thatcher “I knew the Roberts when I first got involved seven years ago. I was impressed with their work ethic. If we are here to have conservative principles then we need to find the right people. Amy was the party Secretary for the largest party in Utah.
Jermey is one of the first people I called to help me unseat a 30 year incumbent Democrat. Speaking as a volunteer, candidate and Senator, you can not get a better choice that Jeremy Roberts.”
4/30/2011 10:58:15 AM Candidate Jeremy Roberts “My story is a bit depressing. We are in Saratoga Springs and my doctor said my problem was that I have Jim Matheson as my congressman and I can’t take it any more.
We need lots of money and I have done fundraising for thousand of dollars. We need to work on campaigns. My wife worked on his campaign. Let’s get to work and get the party back.”
4/30/2011 10:59:52 AM Introductions Jared Jardine “I am a candidate for secretary. My wife and I live up here and this is a great place to live. I am an owner of a company.
I have been a LD vice chair and now chair in NW Orem.
I want to revamp the County party website so that it’s a tool. There will be a lot of confusion on boundaries. I want to get the maps up and bypass the confusion.
I think the county party site should facilitate communication. We are a grassroots party that wants to communicate.
Our site needs to be kept up to date. We need to keep the information current with Senator Lee.
I promise to keep it up to date.
I will keep meeting minutes so you can see what happened in one page. Beyond the duties of secretary, I support an open agenda process. I believe some of the mistrust is due to a closed agenda. We can move forward with some effect if we do that.
We need to strengthen our relationships between county party and candidates. If we have volunteers we should be using our organization to get the message out for our representatives.
When there is a controversial issue, like vouchers, we have school choice in our platform. When our candidates were taking heat the party was silent. We needed to support.
I believe we live in a time when the Constitution is hanging by a thread and we are the right party. It rips my heart out when we attack each other rather than unify.
I want us to unify. We are the most conservative county in the country.”
4/30/2011 11:04:07 AM Candidate Kristin Chevrier “I am running for secretary. I am married to Brian who is the in corner who has the camera on. I am grateful to my kids who helped me.
I have served on LD offices and on the C&B Cmte. I believe in communication, recruiting and history.
In recruiting I have been gathering people from my neighborhood. I have sent out regular emails. And sent out flyers to get people involved. I organized the first “Meet the Candidates Night.” I organized a panel discussion because I wanted to understand it. I got panelists to discuss ex officio. I have organized parliamentary classes to help people.
What I want to do as secretary is improve communications. I want send lists out as soon as possible. I want to get people involved in helping with campaigns. I want to bring the secretary’s in to help.
History is my biggest passion. I appreciated a history of the party. Until Lisa helped we didn’t have documents. I found a prior secretary who had things in his basement. Lisa Shephard has brought this office out of the dark ages.
I plan to have thorough minutes and executive summary for meetings. The long version is important to help reform bylaws and how we should move forward.
I love what Lisa has done with credentials in central committee.
Attendance has gone from 75->300 I would like to be your secretary.”
4/30/2011 11:08:24 AM Candidate Scott Bell “This is a clipboard. I am Short Hot Scott. I am running for Treasurer. I am a CFO with an international company I co-founded in this county. Last year I ran for a seat on the school board. I can’t sit idly by now. The specific role of Treasure is important and so is the team aspect.
In my individual role I am prepared to create a budget. I am able to keep the accounts and reconcile them monthly. I will produce quarterly reports for all meetings. I have a reputation for an attention to detail.
I would like to focus on a being a member of the steering committee. It steers. Where will they steer us? That is what we are here for today. Is this about parliamentary procedure, social club or is it bigger than us? It should be bigger than just the officers. It should last longer than two years. We don’t need 9 different people moving in different directions.
2012 will be a huge year. We cannot afford to have an accident. Senator race, new seat and more.
We are the most conservative county in conservative state. I urge you to support us:
Elect republicans
Know platform
Share platform
Reach out to young voters
Be an example of the greatest principle of self government Focusing on these 5 priorities will get us in the right direction.”
4/30/2011 11:12:28 AM Candidate Steve Reed “Welcome patriots, Republicans and delegates. Thanks for casting a vote.
Today your presence and sacrifice brings honor. Participating in the election is about a slate of choices or do you look at each candidate and choose the best for each office.
So I, Steve Reed, represent myself. Alone. A delegate of the grassroots. I am for the grassroots and will uphold and honor our platform. I will be your voice for your money. I will protect your funds.
My independence alone is not enough. I know I have to increase the bottom line. I have managed 2 million in inventory and worked as a manager.
To manage your budget of 150k is an honor not a novelty. I have made a serious study of our issues. I have supported principles and candidates. I have won my own constituents vote. I have reported on where I stand on the issue.
I have volunteered for Get out the Vote. Please return to the principles and platform.
No more will we allow ourselves to be disenfranchised.
No more will we be afraid from our vote and be able to stand and support our parties platform. No more let us be defeated by a dynasty with a last name of Matheson.
I ask for your vote.”
4/30/2011 11:16:45 AM Candidate Don Larsen “I fully endorse our almost perfect platform. It is my feeling that if I did not stand on the principles of our platform as a guide then I should resign as a delegate. We have to stand on the rule of law which is a must in a stable, free and prosperous society.
If we forget the rule of law we will have chaos and anarchy. I would like to pay tribute to a friend, constitutionalist and patriot. He was mysteriously killed by an illegal immigrant. If his life hadn’t been cut short he would be here with us today.
He served in WWI and kept our country from being invaded by a foreign power. Satan today has changed his tactics and has gone from open warfare to stealth warfare to seek to destroy this country.
Ann Coulter says, Democrats are counting on illegal immigrants to be the support of their party. At least liberals know what they are fighting for. Their plan is to destroy America. They are doing this step by step by stealth warfare.
The apostle Paul said that we would have perilous times in the last days. President Packer said, “”we must not ignore Moroni’s promise when he said, The Lord has commanded you that when you shall see these things come among you, that you should wake to a sense of the awful combinations among you. Whoso buildeth it up and seeketh to overthrow the freedoms (time up).”
4/30/2011 11:21:03 AM Candidate Lisa Jensen “Tall Cool Lisa Jensen to run for this position. I am not party of a slate but you should each make this decision for yourselves. I have an MCC from University of Arizona. 25 years experience and on the board of 2 NPOs. I am able to serve and have the time. I pledge accurate, transparent, accessible, and complete reporting in all things.
I will work closely with others to make us successful our own work with others. You can count on me to work with others. I moved here 10 years ago.
My work has been exemplified by charity, hard work, and passion.
I am passionate about the outcome. Hands on and willing to do what is not just “”my my.”” but will help others. As a software consultant I got paid big bucks. I am now a small business owner with Mary Kay. I am a lifelong Republican since high school.
Precinct Vice Chair for 2008 and 2010. I am currently serving as a state delegate. The constitution is a sacred document that needs to be preserved.
I am loyal to the constitution and conservative party princples. We need to work against the ideas.
I oppose the repeal of HB 116. This provides opportunity to get the attention of the federal government. It is far from perfect but it is a start.
Immigration reform needs intelligent solutions and not a knee jerk. I want to help contribute to our National Utah Delegation to bring reform forward.”
4/30/2011 11:25:13 AM Credential Becky “We have a total 906 credentials. 63% The weather helped. Thank you for coming.
Late credential arrivals: Ben Nadrson, Keith eterry dogug dod side allen browning tom bushby
Karen Anderson is a submitted replacement with LD Chair and Vice Chair.
916 final.”
4/30/2011 11:28:26 AM Vote Richard Jaussi Ballot 1 and SCC ballot. (#4)
4/30/2011 12:08:38 PM Business Taylor Oldroyd “Entitlement reform – Platform resolution
Ayes have it”
4/30/2011 12:09:50 PM Business Taylor Oldroyd Proper role of government – Platform resolution
4/30/2011 12:10:24 PM Discussion Oak Norton Progressive socialists want to teach the wrong things. Please vote for this amendment.
4/30/2011 12:11:06 PM Vote Taylor Oldroyd Ayes have it
4/30/2011 12:11:25 PM Business “Language about platform resolution. The KKK costume. The groups dealt with the issues appropriately. The school district did its own. The fact that the incident occurred at all may be a sign that we need this resolution to repeat what we should all know. Even when there are differences we need to be dignified in our disagreement. All people should be protected from abuse. The LDS church believes in human dignity even when we disagree.
Let us restate our respect in society. Age, religion, race, economics status, gender, sex, nationality should not be reasons for abusive behavior.
We don’t need political police or heavy handed government. Support this resolution.”
4/30/2011 12:14:56 PM Business Taylor Oldroyd
4/30/2011 12:15:05 PM Opposition Laura While it is truly critical that we treat all civilly I don’t believe age, religion and race should be equivalent with sex orientation. This precise language is being fought over at all levels of government. Passing this may work towards a direction that is not helpful.
4/30/2011 12:16:15 PM Business Taylor Oldroyd “The question is what does this do.
It is just a statement.”
4/30/2011 12:16:41 PM Favor Michelle I am for the resolution it simply states dignity for everyone.
4/30/2011 12:16:59 PM Opposition Joseph “As a faithful member of the church I do believe that that kind of activity is wrong. I also believe that persecution of anyone for anything. Especially those who have gay habits is offensive before God. The proposition may not be right.
This is not a solution except perhaps to not ask. We need to stop and accept difference.”
4/30/2011 12:19:36 PM Opposition Dirk This is two incidents in one year that does not make an epidemic. Don’t need a resolution.
4/30/2011 12:19:45 PM Vote Taylor Oldroyd Nays have it.
4/30/2011 12:20:48 PM Credential Taylor Oldroyd One more
4/30/2011 12:20:55 PM Vote Ayes have it.
4/30/2011 12:21:54 PM Favor Chris Herrod “I was asked by the executive committee to present some background. My wife is from Ukraine and I have other family members who are with me. Some have called me very bad things even though I believe the immigration process should be fair. Who knew that we should have to pledge our lives, fortune, and sacred honor.
I believe this is unconstitutional. Most people forget Article I section 9 talks about importation and immigration.
In 1824 Chief Justice John Marhsall said that the flow of voluntary arrival is based on Congress’s power. I oppose it because it is against our platform. We oppose all illegal immigration and amnesty.
HB116 gives legal status. We oppose giving legal recognition. This is against the platform and it discriminates against legal immigrants and those who are trying to come here.
America is for Everyone. It is the great neutral nation of the earth. The mantra is that we should allow them to come.
In 1970 we are evenly balanced. Now in 2000 Mexico is 6 times the largest immigration group. By tolerating it we are discriminating against the rest of the World. They only have 1.7% of the worlds entire population and they get 60% presence in the US.
HB116 is amnesty even though it is not a path to citizenship. We are discriminating against all the other nations. If we do not fix the issue now we will become a bilingual country.
We refuse to talk about the statistics. Mexico has a standard of living of 14,200 in country. Ukraine has standard is 7,400. In ethiopia it’s 800.00.
Where are the rights for these individuals beyond Mexico who would like to be here too. I do not believe that those who have cut the line deserve more of the resources.
24M in 2009, and 41M in 2010.
Illegal births in the last 5 years goes from 4,074->4,866. We are not dealing with this.
The crime rate is higher. Legal immigrants have a lower crime rate than illegal aliens. The rates are going up.
There are also in 2010 435 illegals that have been prosecuted.
ICE removals from SLC Fiscal year 2007.”
4/30/2011 12:31:30 PM Favor I am from Ukraine and would like others from other countries. I stand in opposition to HB116 that favors illegals. Supporters of HB116 say love everyone.
4/30/2011 12:32:43 PM Favor Chris Herrod Even though I disagree I have great respect for my colleagues.
4/30/2011 12:33:02 PM Opposition Holly Richardson “All men are endowed with rights. These rights do not include health care.
We believe in limited government. Those are the principles that we had when we took on immigration. We have a federal government that is supposed to secure our borders. We have a federal government that has so many laws that they won’t execute. We have legal immigration that is broken beyond repair.
There is no fair system. Utah can not fixe the border or the legal system.
We can not fix the allowance for people coming from other countries. What we can do is address what comes through our states borders.
The US will not allow us to do anything about it. We are required to provide medical, and we can’t ask them to participate, make copays. We cannot have open borders in a welfare state.
Utah cannot address the open border issue. We did this year.
These are reforms that will save us over $770 million. It dries the incentives in medical reform. After many years of enabling the problem we have decided to be the adult in the room to take action.
We have given them the ability to the federal government to do this job. If the federal does not do something then the state has the right to do something about the issue.
HB116 was talked about through the summer. These things all came together so that Utah could move forward addressing a difficult situation.
There is a fine from $1000-$2500. It requires an accounting, you have to list all the information. Fingerprinting and biometrics.
E-verify and losing ones business license are also part of the legislation.
While there are problems with E-verify it does stop child identity theft. It established funds to help on theft.
Continuing to do what we have always down will get us the same results.
Ignoring the problem is perpetuating de-facto amnesty. The only power government has is working against criminals.
This is something that we worked together on. We can agree to disagree and the legislators didn’t run away like in Wisconsin. We did something. HB116 is not perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect bill. It will need tweaking and improvement.
I yield my time to Governor Herbert.”
4/30/2011 12:40:03 PM Opposition “It does not take power over immigration.
We are saying that you have a responsibility at the federal level and you have failed. They have failed on deportation.
It says that the states are responsible to deal with the costs. We have a significant number that we have to pay for. We don’t want to just do nothing.
We are working on employment.
This is a 10th amendment, and states rights issue. We determine who can live in our borders and who can work. We want to bring them out of our shadows.
We want to deal with state rights issue like this. If you are here and ICE is after you. If ICE turns a blind eye we are going to do something.
HB116 takes back the states rights. They will pay the fines and the taxes to at least defray some of the costs and reduce identity thefts.
Let me just remind the federal government. We are a state not a colony. We have a confrontation and we will lead the way.”
4/30/2011 12:43:53 PM Business Taylor Oldroyd
4/30/2011 12:44:19 PM Favor Keri Witte “Doing something wrong is not an option. It is not a states rights issue.
Violating the laws and our platforms is not a way to address this issue. We support the Rule of Law. This bill was not a real law it is a message bill. Is this the message that we want to send?
We as delegates have the right to call on them to repeal and rewrite. We believe that we need to do something but not this.
This bill rewards illegal behavior. We oppose all forms of amnesty. That is what this bill does. This bill requires a federal waiver.
Background checks will not catch identity thieves. Terrorists can come in under a family permit.
We need to defend our platform. This is like a contract with our voters.
Please vote yes and adopt this resolution.”
4/30/2011 12:47:35 PM Business Taylor Oldroyd Just pick one in opposition
4/30/2011 12:48:36 PM Opposition HB116 is about people, not amnesty. We should know what it is to be strangers in a strange land. We have people who had to flee persecution. I was a stranger and you took me in. Should the federal government take control? Of course and we urgently call on them to do so. This is an urgent and vote No.
4/30/2011 12:49:44 PM Favor Brandon Beck “I stand in support of the repeal. This is a vote to support our Constitution. We are republican and defend the Constitution. We elect people who take an oath of office. We have sent back two great people to defend and restore a limited government. The argument of who controls this. This issue is for them. We don’t want 50 different policies across the US. Utah can do its own and then other states will do the same things and this will divide our country.
It does violate based on article one. I believe our Constitution was inspired. Those men were wise men who brought us together and are we now more wiser than them?
We are for legal immigrants and want them to come as it is good for our country.
We are the party that will defend this.”
4/30/2011 12:52:36 PM Opposition Steve “Former Utah County Republican Party Chair and have lived out of the country. This is a crossroads for us.
Our leaders have dodged this issue for 20-30 years. We need to make a law to do something. This effects people that we know. The majority are good people.
We sang that this is the land of the free and the home of the brave. This is part of our American dream. These people desire the same things. As I thought about this issue. What are the principle that guide a good decision?
1 Compassion. It is not a card but part of us.
2 Fairness to us and there should be rules and laws for those who can register. They should pay taxes just like we do and not to just receive but to give.
3 The teeth of the law is important. If they don’t step forward to register they ought to go home. And If they don’t pass the background check they should go home.
This starts us moving in to action. Please do not reject HB116, so oppose.”
4/30/2011 12:55:56 PM Favor “I am a legal immigrant. I swore allegiance to this flag and the Constitution of the nation. I remember the words, “”today we are a better nation because of each and everyone of you.””
50 years ago Kennedy said, ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your county.’ What you and I can do is to repeal HB116.
Over 300k are out of employment. Look at the person around you and the chances are there about 90 people who are unemployed status.
Are you going to ignore them. We have heard that we should help people come out of the shadows.
Legal people are living in the shadows.
HB116 is a Utah confusion not Utah solution.
Arizona did not want to become California and California did not want to become legal Mexico. We don’t want to become Mexico.
This is not the end of the world to repeal. We need to repeal and start over again. We need to protect the jobs of Americans.
Stand up and stand tall for your country men. Stand tall and straight for the rule of law. I am asking you to stand with us and repeal HB116. Thank you”
4/30/2011 12:59:17 PM Opposition John “Chair of Provo 31 and there have been arguments from friends of mine. Keri and Arturo talked about the Rule of Law. Frederik Bait wrote about the law. If you have a law it should be respectable.
In the 1980s you prayed for Cuban exiles who would try to get away from there. If they could get a foot on dry land. You wanted them to be rescued.
This is about people who want to work. It doesn’t give amnesty. Work is a conservative value.”
4/30/2011 1:01:30 PM Call the Question Executive committee members will count the votest.
4/30/2011 1:02:54 PM Vote Taylor Oldroyd
4/30/2011 1:04:59 PM Report Gary Herbert “I am reminded of Ronald Reagan if 80% of the time we agree you are my friend.
Is the Republican party divided? No. We share the same goals and objectives. Let’s not make this appear worse. I don’t believe we are divided party.
That being said, we will work together on this. I have talked with a number here who have a different position that I do. We have been dealt cards we don’t like. The federal level has created this.
I am a states rights guy. I think we can do this as a state. I want us to get a solution. None of us supports illegal immigration. We want to take care of this problem.
Until the 1900s immigration was a state issue. Article 1 has to do with Naturalizations. We can work together. We will work with our congressional delegation. We new it was a hard issue. Let’s be civil about this as we go forward.
That being said, I am proud to be an American and grateful to be from Utah. By every measurable area we are number one in the country. Best quality of life. We are the best of the best here in good old Utah.
We’re listed as the fiscally fittest because of you helping us. We are not spending more than we are taking in. We are not going in to debt.
We are one of 8 that has a AAA bonding rating in the country.
I had breakfast a while ago with Steve Forbes because hee appreciates what we do here. We embrace lower taxes and empower the individual to live and the pursuit of happiness.
I have people call me all the time. It seems you have one party rule and I say, yeah, isn’t it great.
It is great because we are getting good outcomes in so many areas. Lowest debt per capita. Doubled exports over the last 5 years.
Our business community is stepping up and that is our principles that is leading to great success.
I conclude by saying I appreciate your being here dealing with difficult issues. Encouraging your elected officials to do the right thing.
We are not perfect.
We are trying to listen and with your help we will go down the road. We do tackle tough issues.
Pension reform, public lands, I filed suit against the Secretary of the Interior about public lands.
States rights.
Let’s tackle them and find solutions.”

4/30/2011 1:42:22 PM Report Mike Lee “There will be no filibuster except with debt limit.
I want to thank Taylor for being our county party chair. I recently had one of my colleagues say, I wish we could all represent Utah. They are aware of our delegate system.
They are aware of our participatory process. Highly educated and informed and love the American Constitution.
Freedom is paramount and when government acts it takes liberty.
I want to stay within my two minutes. One of our greatest threats has to do with our mounting debt. We are adding to it at 1.7 trillion per year. When you are doing that, a new budget that cuts 38 billion out of 1.7 trillion isn’t good enouth. Neither is raising the debt ceiling. I will not do that.
There is a lie conceived in hell by the devil. If we don’t raise the ceiling we will default. That is not true. As long as a treasury secretary cuts the check we will not default.
Spending is a one way ratchet they way. We have to fight against raising the debt ceiling. Thank you very much.”
4/30/2011 1:45:41 PM Report Jason Chaffetz “Thank you. I will be swift. I love that this party can have this debate.
We agree that the Federal government is not doing its job. It has to get fixed.
I have no excuses for what they are doing. I will try and fix it.
This unsustainable debt is wrong. The federal government has added debt by 60% in the last 48 months. 600 million / day in interest. They are pulling money out of wallets to give to someone else.
It’s the peoples money, it’s not your money. We have been growing government not jobs. They have added 157,000 workers. They are planning on adding another set of employees.
We have a payroll of 447 billion payroll. We need to stop this.
We have a special duty and opportunity to live up to
fiscal discipline, limited government, __ __
We need to have more debate about what we are doing in Libya and out there. Those of you who have served and are serving we need to do better.
We are not doing enough. God bless a country that allows us to debate. I met Carlos at Walter Reed 1.5 weeks ago. He is a triple amputee his shirt says “”Proud Marine, some assembly required.””
God bless you and the USA.”
4/30/2011 1:49:36 PM Report John Swallow “Thank you. I am here for Mark Shurtleff. A few years ago I ran for this Congress. I am in the attorney generals office. I am walking around the house to defend our rights. We have fought against health care reform. I d like to thank the legislature and Patrick Henry caucus for getting us standing in that lawsuit.
I’d like to thank the governors office. We have filed this wild lands as well.
Lastly I want to leave you with My Friends we did it. We did it We aren’t just marking time. We have to make a difference”””
4/30/2011 1:51:33 PM Report Becky Lockhart “When I ran for speaker I wanted us to do a good job.
We were able to balance the budget again, did not increase taxes and funded growth in education.
We learned a few lessons as well. The peoples representatives needed to learn lessons and shouldn’t be ashamed of that. We have a blog at voxpupuli.com. You can get lots of information in the interim and I look forward to working with you on during the interim.”
4/30/2011 1:53:10 PM Report Margaret Dayton We can disagree civilly and move forward. Thank you for doing what you do.
4/30/2011 1:53:37 PM Report Thomas Wright “Thanks for being great delegates. You decide who we nominate. The states part is working hard on fair districting.
We are working on the fourth seat. We will raise a lot of money to work really hard. I will walk the neighborhood with you. This is the greatest volunteer position you could have”
4/30/2011 1:54:33 PM Report Gary Anderson I excuse my other commissioners and other county people. With all that is going on in Washington we are pretty boring because we are just doing what we are doing. It’s great to live in Utah County.
